PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
We’re seeking a strategic, hands-on leader to oversee Intermodal Operations at our Chicago Terminal. In this pivotal role, you’ll drive the execution of our Intermodal Operating Plan, optimize terminal performance, and deliver exceptional service to our customers. You’ll ensure all assets are utilized safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively, while fostering a culture of operational excellence.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Lead the execution of the business strategy and operating plan for Chicago Intermodal Operations
- Oversee daily terminal activities, ensuring safety, performance, and efficiency across union, non-union, contractor, and third-party teams
- Build and maintain strong relationships with external railways and operational partners
- Continuously assess and refine operational plans to drive improvements
- Validate contractor work, manage invoices and payments, and oversee terminal administration
- Develop and manage terminal budgets, including setting and achieving annual targets
- Champion safety programs and ensure regulatory compliance
- Optimize train design to support terminal fluidity and minimize delays
- Maintain facility security and prevent unauthorized access or theft
- Effectively manage and resolve union grievances
- Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management for supervisors and non-union staff
- Support career development and succession planning for direct reports
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Transportation, or related field preferred
- Valid driver’s license
- Proven experience in rail, intermodal, or automotive terminal operations
- Strong understanding of union environments and collective agreements
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with SAP, Oasis, Transportation Management System (TMS), Nexus, and Train Yard Execution Systems (TYES) is an asset
- Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to influence outcomes and lead diverse teams

This is a safety critical position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company or regulated drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
