PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Our defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans play a vital role in providing financial security for employees and beneficiaries and are a key driver in attracting and retaining top talent at CPKC. The Canadian defined benefit plan, with assets exceeding $14 billion, is one of Canada’s oldest and largest corporate pension plans.

We are seeking an experienced pension professional to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on all aspects of our pension and other post‑retirement benefit plans across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. This full‑time, permanent role is based at our Calgary head office and reports to the Managing Director, Pension Plan Management, with responsibilities spanning actuarial valuations, financial reporting, plan design, asset‑liability management, and plan administration.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Review financial reporting of pension and other post-retirement benefit plans for external financial statements
  • Develop actuarial assumptions and conduct experience studies
  • Document and explain internal control processes as required for SOX compliance
  • Complete government filings and ensure compliance with pension legislation in Canada and the U.S.
  • Support the Pension Services team with administration functions such as complex pension calculations
  • Collaborate with a variety of stakeholders on benefit upgrades and plan design
  • Draft plan amendments and maintain plan documentation
  • Support the Pension Assets team’s asset allocation decisions and investment manager selections

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree in commerce, finance, actuarial science or other relevant field
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in pension plan management
  • Excellent analytical, financial modelling and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Works efficiently with large volumes of data, while thinking critically to resolve ambiguities
  • Working knowledge of federal pension legislation and pension plan accounting under U.S. GAAP
  • Experience administering pension plans and calculating defined benefit pension amounts
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Self-motivated individual who can take initiative to drive change and works independently with limited oversight
  • Progress towards or attainment of the Fellow, Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) designation is strongly preferred

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
