PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Business Architect reports to a Business Architect Lead and plays a key role in driving strategic transformation across the organization. In this position, they work closely with various business units to design, assess, and refine innovative business models and solutions that deliver measurable value.

This role is instrumental in leveraging design thinking principles, business modeling techniques, and established frameworks to guide the discovery, prototyping, and implementation of new Information Systems initiatives.

This position can be based in Calgary or Toronto.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Lead process design initiatives, applying design thinking and modeling approaches to create and validate innovative business processes, services, and models. 
  • Collaborate across business, IS, and cross-functional teams - building strong stakeholder relationships - to co-create solutions that drive strategic transformation. 
  • Facilitate workshops to gather requirements, map processes, and align stakeholders around desired capabilities and value propositions. 
  • Develop and iterate prototypes and business cases, ensuring feasibility, desirability, and viability through testing and feedback. 
  • Synthesize business analysis and research into actionable recommendations and opportunities for technology enablement, automation, and simplification. 
  • Document and translate requirements for business process, policy, and system changes to relevant technical and business teams, ensuring clarity and effective implementation. 
  • Partner with process owners and project teams to operationalize new designs, supporting communication, training, and smooth transitions for optimal adoption by building business readiness plans, and supporting change management to maximize value realization. 
  • Model CPKC’s leadership competencies and emotional intelligence, championing innovation and fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and accountability. 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, design, innovation, or a related field required. 
  • A minimum of 5 years of frontline business leadership, demonstrating direct engagement with core operational challenges and team management. 
  • 3 or more years of experience in business strategy, business design, service design, or transformation roles, with demonstrated results in solving complex business challenges. 
  • Expertise in business model generation, design thinking, journey mapping, rapid prototyping, and value proposition design. 
  • Proven ability working with multidisciplinary teams to ideate, validate, and implement process and service innovations. 
  • Solid analytical, communication, and workshop facilitation skills; highly collaborative, creative, and comfortable with ambiguity. 
  • Experience translating business needs into actionable concepts, prototypes, and requirements that align with technology, customer experience, and operational goals. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with senior leadership and stakeholders across business and technical domains. 
  • Highly effective communicator: persuasive, empathetic, and able to inspire and align diverse perspectives towards common outcomes.

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
