PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Reporting to the Director of Commodity Tax, the Commodity Manager will be responsible for leading a team to ensure compliance with all commodity tax requirements, provide daily tax guidance to business units, support audits and appeals, and assist with major projects and tax‑planning initiatives - offering a strong opportunity to influence enterprise‑wide tax strategy and contribute to optimizing the company’s overall tax position.

This is a 12-month fixed term contract position.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Manage and continually enhance Canadian commodity tax compliance and recovery programs, ensuring alignment with legislative requirements and SOX controls
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching with a direct report to maintain high standards of tax compliance and team capability
  • Advise business units on the commodity tax implications of daily transactions, recommending strategies to minimize exposure and maximize tax efficiency
  • Support the development, validation, and maintenance of system tax logic (including SAP) to ensure accurate tax treatment and compliance with legislative changes
  • Assist in federal, provincial, and internal commodity tax audits by responding to queries, reviewing assessments, preparing objections/appeals, resolving disputes, and implementing corrective actions
  • Conduct compliance reviews of complex transactions and communicate findings to mitigate potential tax liabilities, interest, and penalties
  • Develop and refine processes to strengthen tax compliance and support tax recovery initiatives
  • Participate in internal reviews and audits to ensure adherence to established control measures
  • Monitor new and emerging commodity tax legislation and support the Director, Commodity Tax in developing updated tax policies and procedures
  • Contribute to tax planning initiatives and major projects to optimize the company’s overall tax position

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA or equivalent) required or in progress
  • A minimum of 5 years of post-designation relevant commodity tax experience gained with industry, public practice, or government
  • Strong knowledge of SAP and basic understanding of tax logic would be an added advantage
  • Broad knowledge of railway or transportation business would be an asset

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
