PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As a Car Engineer you are responsible for maintaining and improving existing designs and standards of both railcar structures and components.  The employee is expected to use all available data sources, engineering analysis, and new technologies to drive rail car design and standards improvements. The Car Engineer will also investigate technical issues related to railcars in CP’s fleet and provide solutions for field forces. The employee is also responsible for overseeing open top loading practices and providing technical assistance to field Mechanical on open-top loading related issues.  The Car Engineer is expected to work directly with potential shippers to develop and test new securement methods when necessary. Participation is essential on industry committees with The Association of American Railroads (AAR) and the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) to establish car and component standards and load securement for interchange.  When required, the employee must work side by side with regulatory bodies such as Transport Canada, the Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Performs mechanical design and modification to rail cars;
  • Conducts failure analysis including fatigue and stress analysis;
  • Prepares formal technical documents to be used by both CP shops and external contract shops;
  • Prepares drawings as required (CAD);
  • Use engineering analysis to drive optimizing car modifications;
  • Travels to shops to inspect and audit production of car modifications;
  • Travels to shops or other locations on CP to investigate car issues;
  • Participates in new car purchases by providing specifications for cars and components;
  • Participates in new car purchases by meeting with car builders, performing inspections for acceptance (“sample car”), and arranges and oversees contract inspectors;
  • Works with car builders to seek solutions to issues which develop in service;
  • Works with other railways through the AAR to develop standards for cars and components, attends meetings offsite;
  • Works with other railways through the AAR to develop load securement figures required for safe transport and interchange, attends meetings offsite;
  • Works with shippers to identify required car type and develop figures through testing and obtain AAR approval for load securement;
  • Provides final determination in disputes of load securement;
  • Drives business case developments for new technology purchases and/or process integrations to improve railway safety and efficiency;
  • Supports continuous improvement of existing technology and further development of standards and processes;
  • Adheres to Canadian Pacific’s health and safety policy;

 

POSITION SKILLS:

  • Ability to use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software;
  • Ability to perform engineer analysis using finite element software;
  • Ability to conduct vehicle dynamics simulations using existing programs;
  • Ability to write clear and concise instructions (“car modifications”) for CP shops and external shops;
  • Ability to incorporate new technologies to improve safety, costs and operational efficiency;
  • Ability and drive to drill down to determine the root causes of incidents;
  • Ability to work on parallel projects;
  • Ability to work outside of defined scopes on diverse projects;
  • Ability to interact successfully with all personnel from shop floor staff to senior executives;
  • Willingness to learn and think outside the box;
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Desire to develop leadership skills.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have an Engineering degree from an accredited university in Mechanical, Civil,  or a similar discipline;
  • Must be registered as a P.Eng with APEGA or eligible for registration;
  • Must have experience with design and finite element modeling;
  • Practical hands-on experience with mechanical equipment an asset;
  • Operational environment experience drilling down and driving solutions an asset;
  • Respond to calls and occasionally work after hours and on weekends;
  • Must be able to write clear and concise reports which will be distributed to high-level management;
  • Must hold a full Class 5 driver’s license;
  • Must hold a Canadian Passport with the ability to travel outside of Canada.

Management Conductor Program:
