The Engineer in Training - Crossing Compliance will validate crossing information, perform desktop reviews of safety assessments, and contribute to CP’s standard practice documents. The successful candidate will also liaise with road authorities and private owners, and develop construction work plans as assigned by the Project Manager Crossing Compliance.



  • Develop understanding of Transport Canada’s Grade Crossings Regulations and Standards for the purpose of:
    • Interpreting results of data collection to validate the deficiency list for each crossing;
    • Reviewing and validating CP and external crossing assessments;
    • Compiling recommendations on how to remedy deficiencies at a crossing and prepare scope of work and cost estimates;
    • Apply the regulations and standards to accurately prioritize construction projects, regulatory applications, and government reporting;
    • Supporting internal groups with inquiries related to grade crossing compliance;
  • Update crossing database and validate data accuracy, this includes interpretation and providing guidance to external consultants;
  • Liaise with Road Authorities to modify road crossing design criteria to mitigate costly compliance work;
  • Contribute to CP’s standard practice documents for crossing compliance work in Canada;
  • Create crossing compliance construction work plans for internal and external use;
  • Review crossing design plans and provide feedback to designers for compliance;
  • Occasional travel to educate internal groups responsible for crossing maintenance;
  • Validate and manage completed compliance field work to ensure it meets the regulatory requirements;
  • Support the crossing compliance team including project manager, coordinator, supervisors and co-op students with all projects and targets.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or industrial discipline) from an accredited institution;
  • Must be P.Eng eligible;
  • Previous experience working in project management capacity with ability to determine scope of work, cost estimates, regulatory & compliance etc in an operational setting;
  • Experience working on and around track is preferred;
  • Strong problem solving skills and decision making skills;
  • Strong data analysis experience required; 
  • Must be proficient with MS Office, experience with SAP would be an asset:
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills;
  • Must have valid driver's license;
  • Strong leadership & technical skills.
