PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
We are seeking a multifaceted Engineer In Training to join our Hydrogen Locomotive Systems team. Apply sophisticated data analytics and machine learning to improve hydrogen locomotive design and performance. Your insights will directly influence both software and hardware improvements, ensuring that CPKC remains at the forefront of balanced rail transportation.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Analyze operational data from hydrogen locomotives to identify performance bottlenecks and areas for improvement in both software algorithms and hardware components
- Develop machine learning models to predict system failures, optimize energy consumption, and improve the overall efficiency of hydrogen propulsion systems
- Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate data-driven insights into locomotive control systems, ensuring detailed operation and real-time adaptability
- Establish real-time data pipelines to supervise locomotive performance, enabling proactive maintenance and continuous improvement
- Work closely with software developers, mechanical engineers, and operations teams to translate data insights into actionable improvements across the hydrogen locomotive system
- Build detailed reports and presentations for collaborators, outlining findings, suggestions, and the effects of implemented changes
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Data Science, Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Valid driver’s license
- Valid passport, ability to travel to US/CAN without restrictions
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or similar
- Experience with machine learning frameworks and data analysis tools
- 1+ years' railroad experience considered an asset
- Understanding hydrogen fuel cell technology and its application in locomotives considered an asset
- Knowledge of control systems design, including Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming, Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/ Industrial Protocol (IP), and Open Platform Communications (OPC)
- Understanding safety standards such as International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61511 for Safety Instrumented Systems

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
