PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Engineer – Zero-Emission Locomotive Development is responsible for the design, development, manufacturing, optimization, operation, and cost optimization of
- Zero Emission Locomotive Energy Storage and Delivery Systems
- Battery systems
- Compressed Hydrogen storage and delivery systems
- Fuel cell systems
- Zero Emission Locomotive Propulsion and Traction Control systems including Inverters, MU & Trainline
- Zero Emission Locomotive Energy Management and Control Systems
- Zero Emission Locomotive Human Machine Interface
- Zero Emission Locomotive Control Stand
- Zero Emission Locomotive Auxiliary Systems (Cooling, Compressed Air, Auxiliary Power, Air Brake)
- Zero Emission Locomotive Networks
- Zero Emission Locomotive Offboard Communication Systems
- Zero Emission Locomotive LVVR, Event Recorder, Crew Alert, LIG, LCCM, PTC and ETC Systems
- Zero Emission Locomotive Mechanical Systems including Cooling, Pressure Regulation, Couplers, Brakes, Bogies, Traction Motors, and Combos
The candidate will be also responsible for participation in and supporting field testing of the locomotives in addition to working with various vendors to integrate CPKC’s control system with their existing systems and components. The candidate must be able to document work, interact with electrical team stakeholders, and follow established software and hardware development principles, conduct root cause analysis, and write concise & comprehensive reports for upper management. Depending on experience, the position may be filled as an Engineer-In-Training
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Power and PLC Electronics control system Engineering & Design (Contactors, Breakers, Relays, VFDs, Inductors, Power Electronics, Power supplies)
- Locomotive Mechanical Engineering
- Zero emission locomotive energy storage and delivery systems design (Electrical and Mechanical)
- PLC software development (e.g. Studio 5000)
- Communication protocol integration of electrical components (ex. CAN bus, Modbus, Ethernet)
- Integration of communications hardware (ex. gateways, routers, switches)
- Integration of Air Brake mechanical and electronic subsystem
- Programming, setup and troubleshooting of power electronics systems
- Troubleshooting and support for PLC software and hardware; and
- Adhere to CPKC’s health and safety policy.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Software Engineering or similar discipline is required
- Eligibility for P. Eng. registration with APEGA
- An experience in designing and implementing technology from a prototype to production system is required
- Experience with Studio 5000 software and Computer Aided Design (e.g. AutoCAD) software an asset
- Strong industry experience performing analysis and drilldowns using available data is required
- Knowledge of software design protocols and documentation an asset
- Must be proficient with MS Office (specifically Word and Excel)
- Hands-on experience, field experience with heavy industry such as rail
- Other practical hands-on experience (automotive repair, robotics, furniture) an asset
- Ability to travel mostly to domestic locations and respond to calls occasionally after hours and on weekends
- Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Valid passport, ability to travel to United States, Mexico, Europe, Australia and Asia without restrictions.
