PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Geotechnical Engineering Field Manager leads the planning, inspection, design, and execution of complex geotechnical projects to address and resolve issues impacting railway infrastructure. Serving as a key technical expert, the manager ensures all field operations adhere to stringent safety standards and regulatory requirements while supporting CPKC’s strategic goals. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams, leverages advanced engineering practices, and provides guidance to optimize project delivery and maintain the reliability and safety of railway operations.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Deliver real-time, system-wide emergency response and support for geohazard incidents—including slope/roadbed failures, debris flow/washouts—by providing engineered, practical solutions to promptly restore operations
- Travel up to 50% across the CPKC network in Canada and the U.S. to oversee critical geotechnical activities and responses
- Plan, coordinate, manage, and actively participate in routine follow-up field inspections, as well as annual system-wide rock slope assessments
- Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of comprehensive system-wide tunnel inspections
- Manage contracts related to soil stabilization and rock slope stabilization, serving as the principal CPKC technical expert for these projects
- Contribute to the development of both single-year and multi-year budget proposals for geohazard management, covering risks such as soil/rock slope, tunnel, and debris hazards
- Perform inspections to collect information and verify contractual requirements for Capital or Special Maintenance Authority (SMA) projects
- Act as CPKC’s internal geotechnical expert to complete reviews and provide advice to internal stakeholders
- Lead and manage CPKC’s unique and one-of-a-kind water body hazard program
- Provide on-call support and emergency response on a rotating cycle to support 24/7 operations
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Civil Engineering
- Valid driver's license
- Must be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer/Geoscientist
- Minimum of 6 years of geotechnical or geological engineering experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Proven track record in managing incident response operations
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver engaging presentations
- Self-starter, motivated, adaptable, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks effectively

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
