PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
CPKC’s Pension Team, recently honored with the 2025 CEO Award for Excellence, offers a valuable opportunity to oversee investment and pension plan management in a corporate setting. As Manager, Pension Asset Management, you will lead key functions such as investment strategy, operations, financial reporting, plan funding, and governance. CPKC’s pension plans, including a $13 billion Canadian defined benefit plan with global investments, play a vital role in employee financial security, helping attract and retain talent. The Pension Team ensures the plans remain well-funded, safeguarding the company’s and beneficiaries’ long-term financial wellness.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITES:
- Develop investment strategies by performing research, preparing detailed analyses and creating and delivering presentation materials to support recommendations to senior management
- Implement approved investment strategies by leading investment manager searches, conducting due diligence on prospective investments, negotiating investment agreements and completing portfolio transitions
- Monitor investment performance and oversee the preparation of performance reports
- Assist with managing pension asset operations, including forecasting cash flows and approving transactions such as cash transfers, expense payments, capital calls, and FX transactions
- Support reporting for the company’s financial statements and annual fund financial statements, including the execution of internal controls
- Support the preparation of actuarial valuations by conducting analysis to support actuarial assumptions, preparing and reviewing plan participant data and collaborating with the external actuaries on valuation methodologies
- Create and deliver presentations to senior management on financial reporting and pension funding matters
- Participate in collective bargaining on pension matters when required
- Assist with the administration of the Company’s Pension Improvement Account to support sustainable improvements to the defined benefit plan rules
- Prepare statutory filings, plan amendments, and other requirements for proper governance of the pension plans
- Communicate the pension plan to participants through written materials and presentations
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Undergraduate degree in Commerce, Finance, Economics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics or other relevant field
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience with demonstrated knowledge and experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Institutional investment management with specific knowledge of pension investment and operations; or Pension plan management, developed in a pension consulting environment or working for a corporate or public-sector pension plan
- Completion of or progress towards a relevant professional or educational designation, such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Master of Business Administration (MBA)
- Working knowledge of corporate finance, treasury, and accounting
- Solid understanding of pension governance and Canadian regulatory processes

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
