PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
As Legal Counsel – Labour & Employment, you will provide proactive, business-oriented legal advice across all levels of the corporation, collaborating with stakeholders and external counsel on a diverse range of labour and employment matters throughout Canada. This role offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative team environment while managing novel and challenging issues arising from CPKC’s extensive operations and 140-year history. You will be involved in unique legal matters before courts at all levels, arbitrators, and tribunals such as the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal and the Canadian Industrial Relations Board.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Manage and conduct litigation, hearings, and arbitrations throughout Canada, including: reviewing and preparing pleadings and submissions; attending mediations, arbitrations, hearings and other judicial or tribunal appearances; and providing overall litigation strategy and direction
- Support implementation and compliance with legislation and regulations
- Provide timely, practical, and trusted legal advice in various aspects of CPKC’s business, while ensuring legal compliance and alignment with CPKC policies, practices and procedures
- Provide instructions, direction and oversight to external counsel in their performance of CPKC legal work
- Assist in preparing executive and board reporting
- Assist in audit and compliance reporting and assessment
- Provide legal support on internal investigations and reporting
- Provide support to the Legal Services team in other areas of law, including commercial, regulatory, and others as requested
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate of a recognized law school and member of the Law Society in at least one Canadian province
- Minimum 5 years of legal practice at a private law firm, corporate law department or governmental/quasi-governmental law department
- Strong working knowledge of labour, employment, and human rights law
- Familiarity with litigation and arbitration processes and comfort with independently managing litigation files.
- Strong organizational skills to prioritize workload in a time-sensitive environment.
- Possess strong analytical skills, sound judgment and an ability to apply legal principles to CPKC’s business and operations in an effective, proactive and pragmatic manner

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
