PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

 

As Locomotive Control and Electrical Systems Engineer/Analyst, you will utilize Locomotive Operation and Control Systems Hardware and Firmware Engineering, Radio Frequency Communications, Radio and IP Networking design technology, embedded system design principles and data analytics technology to design, select, implement, test, and deliver locomotive electrical/electronic hardware, communications, and control systems solutions. Primary objective is to improve safety, optimize asset utilization, improve network speed (dwell), meet regulatory requirements, reduce costs, and improve operational productivity.  This position will provide technical expertise through the entire systems life cycle including development project execution, maintenance support, and reliability. 

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  • Articulate an implement onboard electrical/electronic equipment, communications & control system, design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance strategies;
  • Automate root cause analysis and trending on overall system performance, of both component level and system level failures using state of the art predictive analytics technologies including CEP and temporal databases onboard and off board;
  • Participate in industry standards development including direct participation in the pertinent AAR TAGs;
  • Develop requirements, schematics, process and other design/operational documents for qualification, deployment, and maintenance of locomotive control and communication systems;
  • Develop requirements and support development of effective processes for the management, development, testing, and deployment of control system firmware;
  • Develop Locomotive test strategy’s and specify/develop test equipment and diagnostic scripting and firmware tools required to improve performance of locomotive onboard and off-board communications and related control systems;
  • Prepare technical instructions (work scopes, technical tips, quality alerts and other bulletins) for new locomotive systems, new maintenance policies, reliability improvement programs and other modifications;
  • Evaluate new locomotive technologies to support locomotive reliability;
  • Support the mechanical shops to implement locomotive control systems technologies;
  • Support integration of business applications with locomotive control systems;
  • Monitor compliance to specification of all key locomotive material suppliers with oversight on physical audits, teardowns and other inspections as required to ensure material meets CP requirements.

 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • APEGA Registered Professional Engineer in the province of Alberta or eligible for EIT development program under APEGA;
  • BApSc Electrical with minor in CS, or BApSc Mechanical with Electrical/CS training;
  • Relevant experience in embedded systems firmware development & diagnostic tool development, especially UNIX based;
  • Excellent working knowledge of both electrical and electronic wiring, equipment, and systems;
  • Proven technical leadership skills;
  • Proven track record of technology conceptualization and delivery;
  •  Experience in Control Systems, Network architecture/design, IP Messaging considered an asset;
  • Training in Systems Engineering methodologies;
  • RF communications systems, RF or IP network architecture design, RAN deployment, and network maintenance experience an asset;
  • System Architectural experience or qualifications considered an asset;
  • Experience in remote monitoring of mobile assets considered an asset;
  • SAP Plant Maintenance experience is considered an asset;
  • Ability to facilitate root cause analysis with mixed disciplines (Electrical/Mechanical/Shops Vendors);
  • Track record as a team player, and able to work autonomously. The candidate must be a self-starter, finisher, inquisitive, persistent, innovative, and well organized.
