PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Reporting to the Director Accounting Policy, the Manager Accounting Policy will have a key role in ensuring CPKC’s accounts and disclosures are prepared in accordance with its accounting policies as well as US GAAP and regulatory reporting requirements. They will support the Finance and other functional teams and business units by providing a clear understanding of the accounting and other financial reporting effects of new and potential transactions and policies. They will monitor and assess the expected impact of emerging financial reporting developments and industry issues and manage the timely and successful execution of prioritized workplan deliverables.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Track new and proposed changes in US GAAP and SEC disclosure requirements and collaborate on successful implementation of changes
  • Maintain and manage Accounting Policy work plan focused on achieving strategic objectives and prioritized based on stakeholder requirements and team capacity constraints. Regularly and proactively collaborate with Accounting Policy Director about scope, resource allocation, timing, and potential opportunities or challenges.
  • Support continuous improvement of CPKC’s accounting policies though alignment with stakeholder goals, changes in business practices, and relevant financial reporting and industry developments
  • Prepare well-researched and timely written accounting and reporting analysis of unusual or complex transactions by gaining complete understanding of transactions, researching relevant accounting guidance, and applying applicable requirements to specific fact sets
  • Develop an understanding of CPKC’s business activities and identify opportunities to develop relationships with internal stakeholders. Participate in cross-functional resolution of accounting matters
  • Manage the quarterly significant contract review process, including monitoring and pre-screening of submissions, reviews, and timely delivery of targeted training to key business unit representatives
  • Participate in monthly, quarterly and annual corporate reporting processes, including timely coordination of disclosure checklists, management representation letters, and subsequent events procedures

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Accounting designation: CPA, with 7+ years of experience, primarily in financial reporting, accounting policy and/or interpretation of US GAAP/IFRS, including in connection with public entities
  • An aptitude for and keen interest in complex technical accounting
  • Organized and confident managing multiple and shifting team priorities and accountabilities
  • Experienced in contract analysis for purposes of assessing accounting implications
  • Communicates clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Effective problem solving in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management across the company

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
