PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Manager Electrical Systems and Data reports to the Senior Director of Locomotive Technology. The position is responsible managing and supporting the design, development and integration of the electronics and control systems onboard locomotives developed as part of CP’s hydrogen locomotive program. The ideal candidate must have a diverse background within the power and electronics field with clear practical experience from conception to implementation of electronics and control systems. The candidate must be able to reason and be accountable in making decisions within this dynamic and fast paced environment. Full accountability to timelines and constructive tension to keep suppliers aligned with timelines is essential.  The candidate must uphold leadership in safety as a principle and must be able to ensure procedures and documents for the safe operation, maintenance, and testing of onboard locomotive systems by the technical teams are followed. Finally, the candidate must be team oriented and open to work collaboratively to meet strict timelines.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Manage and support the electrical, electronics and control systems teams to deliver hydrogen locomotive platforms;
  • Develop and maintain product roadmaps and update executive stakeholders on project progress;
  • Hold team accountable to timelines escalating risks and issues in a timely manner;
  • Make critical design decisions based on technical input to deliver project milestones on-time;
  • Hold electrical and control system suppliers accountable to delivery timelines;
  • Finalize designs and supporting production, installation and maintenance documentation for sign-off by the Chief Engineer;
  • Support hands-on support for technical teams;
  • Support continuous improvement of existing technology and further development of standards and processes;
  • Coach and mentor team members and participate in knowledge sharing sessions;
  • Adhere to Canadian Pacific’s health and safety policy.

Ability to create project status documentation which is communicated to management including executive stakeholders;

Ability to supervise to ensure safe practices are followed;

Ability to hold technical staff accountable to maintain project deadlines;

Ability to read and understand existing locomotive electrical drawings;

Ability to review drawings and documents prior to reaching the Chief Engineer for sign-off;

Ability to review supplier work and make changes for the business as necessary;

Ability to hold suppliers and internal stakeholders accountable to deadlines;

Ability to work on parallel projects;

Ability to work outside of defined scopes and diverse projects;

Willingness to learn and think outside the box;

Ability to execute work with a sense of urgency and pride;

Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal;

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have an Engineering degree from an accredited university in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline;
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer with APEGA or eligible for registration;
  • Must have demonstrated experience in managing electrical and control system design from conception to implementation;
  • Experience with locomotives and/or industrial equipment an asset;
  • Experience with hydrogen and battery supply chains an asset;
  • Practical hands-on experience (automotive repair, robotics, renovation) an asset;
  • Operational environment experience drilling down and driving solutions an asset;
  • Ability to travel mostly to domestic locations and respond to calls occasionally after hours and on weekends;
  • Ability and willingness to be “hands-on” an asset;
  • Must be able to write clear and concise reports which will be distributed to high level management;
  • Must hold a full stage Class 5 driver’s permit;
  • Must hold a Canadian Passport with the ability to travel to the United States, Mexico, Europe, and Asia.

Management Conductor Program:
