PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Reporting to the Director, Sustainability, the Sustainability Manager, will lead the effective delivery of processes, projects and tools to facilitate best in class reporting, ESG performance and communication of CP’s sustainability practices and objectives. As a key member of the sustainability team, this position’s primary objective is to engage with and provide support to CP’s functional groups and external stakeholders in the development, implementation, communication and monitoring of CP’s sustainability strategy - Sustainably Driven.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Manages CP’s sustainability disclosure and reporting process, assuring transparent and robust internal and external sustainability communication and disclosure;
  • Leads the development and production of CP’s sustainability reports, website, corporate reporting, regulatory filings, customer survey’s and ESG rankings and ratings platforms (eg. DJSI, Sustainalytics, MSCI, ISS, etc.);
  • As a senior-level sustainability practitioner, provides broad expertise, analytical skills and organizational support to align company sustainability disclosure practices to reporting standards such as GRI, SASB, UN SDG’s, TCFD, CDP and others;
  • Provides strategic guidance on priority ESG programs, company practices, ratings and rankings performance, tracking and ongoing engagement;
  • Coach and develop direct reports to advance sustainability skillset, CP leadership values and ESG reporting programs and practices;
  • Collaborates with business groups, CP employees and external stakeholders to drive meaningful environmental and social impacts aligned with company ESG objectives across CP’s value chain;
  • Supports continual improvement by evaluating reporting best practices, industry sector benchmarking, gap assessments and research of sustainability practices, ESG disclosure and evolving reporting standards and practice;
  • Implements improvement processes to enhance external disclosures and sustainability practices;
  • Collaborates and engages with CP functional groups, employees, industry associations, vendors, customers and ESG ratings organizations to support delivery and communication of CP’s sustainability agenda;
  • Supports the implementation and delivery of CP’s overall sustainability strategy, Sustainably Driven and contributes to other sustainability-related projects and initiatives at CP as required;
  • Supports internal governance and change management across the organization, sustainability working groups, sustainability steering committees and others to advance sustainability practice at CP.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • An undergraduate degree in a related discipline including Sustainability, Environmental Science or Studies, Communications or Business. A master’s level degree, ESG certifications or post graduate specialization in sustainability would be considered an asset;
  • 5+ years of experience in a sustainability field (e.g. sustainability consultant, sustainability practitioner, corporate financial reporting or sustainability communications);
  • 10+ years of professional experience in a related field (e.g. environment, finance, business, communications) with several years of experience leading direct and in-direct reports to accomplish short and long-term program objectives.
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to evaluate and lead the work of sustainability consultants and outside experts;
  • Demonstrates professionalism, dependability, integrity, and trustworthiness, gaining respect amongst senior leaders and peers;
  • Positive, enthusiastic, and passionate about the role, the company, and the impact a strong sustainability program can have;
  • Relevant work experience with:
    • The development of sustainability and corporate public disclosures related to material sustainability topics, customer requests, sustainability reports, annual corporate reports, CDP, TCFD and ESG ratings surveys (DJSI, MSCI, Sustainalytics, ISS, etc.);
    • Strong knowledge of reporting frameworks and standards (GRI, SASB, UN SDG’s, TCFD, ISSB and others);
    • Experience with leading continuous improvement projects and programs to advance performance and embed ESG practices into complex organizations;
    • Experienced in project management, leading team members and working across complex organizations, directing consultant services and engaging with external agencies and ESG rating firms to meet program objectives;
  • Familiarity with leading ESG information management systems and data management tools is considered an asset (eg. Enablon, EcoVadis, Workiva, Sales Force, Metrio, etc.);
  • Possesses strong knowledge of emerging sustainability topics, preferably in the transportation sector;
  • Proven analytical and organizational skills, detail-oriented and excellent communication skills, including report writing and public speaking skills;
  • Strong interpersonal abilities and demonstrated ability to build relationships within and outside the organization to support program objectives;
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft office and Excel spreadsheets;
  • Strong ability and willingness to work independently and collaboratively with all levels of the organization.

Management Conductor Program:
