PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Managing Director (MD) Operations Technology reports to the Assistant Vice-President (AVP) Operations Technology. The position is responsible managing all aspects of CPKC’s operations technology program including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Autonomous and Advanced Train Control Development and Deployment (ex. PTC/ETC)
  • Wayside Detector Technology (ex. Automated Inspections, Brake Effectiveness Testing)
  • Autonomous and Non-Autonomous Track Inspection and Evaluation Programs (ex. ATGMS, RFD)
  • Business Root Cause Analysis (ex. Derailments, Service Interruptions)
  • Regulatory Rule Advocacy and Process Innovation (ex. Exemption/Waiver Implementation, Rule Definitions)
  • Operating, Mechanical, and Engineering Standards Maintenance, Development and Deployment

The position requires leading teams implicated in research, development, and deployment of operations focused technologies aimed to increase the safety, efficiency, and reliability of railway operations while minimizing costs through innovation and internal development programs.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Increase the safety, efficiency, and reliability of railway operations while minimizing costs through innovation and internal development programs
  • Develop, maintain, and execute product roadmaps and update executive stakeholders on project progress
  • Lead definition and deployment of technologies required through increasingly updated regulations (ex. ETC)
  • Hold team accountable to timelines escalating risks and issues in a timely manner
  • Make critical design decisions based on technical input to deliver project milestones on-time
  • Hold internal stakeholders and suppliers accountable to delivery timelines
  • Support hands-on with technical teams to meet strict project delivery timelines
  • Support continuous improvement of existing technology and further development of standards and processes
  • Coach and mentor team members and participate in knowledge sharing sessions
  • Adhere to Canadian Pacific’s health and safety policy

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Engineering or similar Engineering discipline
  • P.Eng. designation in Canada or the United States
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) an asset
  • Hands on experience in managing operations technology in the transportation sector
  • Must have demonstrated experience managing annual technology budgets exceeding $100M
  • Experience in project management, scheduling, planning, and  execute projects autonomously and independently
  • Able to maintain a positive and respectful high performance team environment
  • Experience with rolling stock, track, signaling systems an asset
  • Experience with train operations as asset
  • Locomotive Engineer and/or Conductor qualification an asset
  • Practical hands-on experience (automotive restoration/repair, robotics, renovation) an asset
  • Operational environment experience drilling down and driving solutions an asset
  • Ability to communicate to executives with a proven record of following through on projects an asset

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
