PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As a Public Safety Communications Officer, you are the vital link between the public, first responders, and railway operations, ensuring swift and effective action during emergencies. Balancing high-pressure decision-making with routine coordination, you’ll protect lives, assets, and the environment by managing critical incidents and empowering safe operations. This dynamic role requires agility, clear communication, and collaboration, making you the voice of calm and control when it matters most. POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Ensure public safety, environmental protection, and the safeguarding of CPKC staff, assets, operations, and reputation through effective incident management
  • Accurately capture detailed information from reporting parties to determine the nature and urgency of incidents
  • Initiate appropriate responses to emergencies, mitigate harm, and make timely notifications based on procedures and knowledge of police or railway functions
  • Recognize issues and recurring patterns that may impact the safety of railway staff, the public, and railway operations
  • Track and supervise patrolling officers’ statuses while managing radio communications effectively
  • Provide investigative support to officers using Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC), Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), and other databases
  • Maintain awareness of known risk factors to ensure proactive handling of incidents
  • Work with other CPKC departments and external organizations to develop solutions during critical incidents
  • Respond to routine inquiries from customers effectively while handling urgent incidents in parallel
  • Support efficient operations by adapting to evolving tools, systems, and communication technologies

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary education in a related field preferred)
  • Minimum typing speed of 40 WPM with 90% accuracy
  • 2 years of experience in dispatch or equivalent fast-paced role with proficiency in CAD, radio communications, and/or mapping applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities in English, preferably including fluency in French and/or Spanish
  • Capable of making critical decisions under pressure and solving complex problems in high-stress situations
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive work relationships
  • Proficient in adapting to changing technology and learning new systems
  • Familiarity with police procedures, CPIC systems, and railway operations is an asset
  • Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
