Specialist Hazmat Regulatory Reporting

Reporting to the Manager of Hazmat Programs, the Specialist Hazmat Reporting assists in monitoring and influencing regulatory activity with the respect to the transportation of dangerous goods / hazardous materials on the CPKC network.  Develops strategies related to the regulatory requirements that must be met to safely transport regulated commodities. Monitors corporate performance with respect to regulatory requirements and internal standards for the transportation of dangerous goods / hazardous materials. 



  • Responsible for accessing and analyzing data using CPKC Systems including, TYES, NEXUS,  Business Objects, Vista Gui, as well as Microsoft Office Tools.  An understanding of railway operations, train / traffic routes with high analytical skills to allow for dissemination of the information being presented
  • Accountable for providing regulatory reports for compliance in both Canada and per 49 CFR and TDG Regulations
  • Responsible for HazMat reporting on shipments for internal purposes (ie annual insurance assessments, Final Offer of Arbitration, Legal cases
  • Work with and provide input to the Dangerous Goods Documentation Specialist to ensure internal systems comply with dangerous goods / hazardous materials regulatory changes and manage projects to ensure completion
  • Responds to government agencies with respect to investigations, orders, directives and violations
  • Monitors and tracks Hazardous Materials Incidents and completes required follow-up reporting with regulatory agencies
  • Works with the Emergency and Hazmat Response Officers and the Environmental Officers in the emergency response to hazardous and non-hazardous materials emergencies by providing regulatory guidance allowing the safe operation of trains
  • Deal with internal and external customers at all levels via telephone and email to ensure successful communication during dangerous goods incidents
  • Coordinate with the Emergency and Hazmat Response Officers, CPKC Police and other departments as required for incident training and emergency response drills
  • Assist in reviewing CPKC internal training programs to meet regulatory requirements for the transportation of Dangerous Goods / Hazardous Materials



  • University degree with emphasis on management systems, regulatory and policy analysis or 5 years of progressive experience in the rail industry
  • 3-5 years working in the railway industry
  • Practical understanding of operations within CPKC functional groups
  • An understanding of railway operations, train / traffic routes with high analytical skills to allow for dissemination of the information being presented
  • Responsible for accessing and analyzing data using CPKC Systems including, TYES, NEXUS, Business Objects, Vista Gui, Order Entry/SAP TM as well as Microsoft Office tools.
  • On-call 24/7 (dependent on railway incidents)
  • Works with minimal supervision when planning, scheduling and arranging own activities to accomplishing objectives
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required

Management Conductor Program:
