PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Join CPKC in this critical leadership role - Specialist Safety Programs (US). In this position you will work with an innovative team at CPKC driving safety accountability and leadership through developing, facilitating, and implementing various safety programs, policies, procedures, and work standards. These efforts will support the CPKC Safety Management System (SMS) / Risk Reduction Program (RRP) and align with safety and regulatory requirements. This position works closely with the Operations teams to facilitate understanding and compliance to all programs, policies and procedures, identifying and implementing action to improve safety performance ensuring all 20,000+ CPKC employees go home safe each day.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Provide subject matter expertise on the application and interpretation of corporate safety programs including CPKC’s SMS / RRP, policies, procedures, and standards within all operating departments
- Assess potential workplace hazards / risks and providing recommendations to reduce the risk of employee exposure
- Prepare detailed reports outlining objectives, methodology, results, and recommendations related to the overall efficiency and performance of CPKC’s SMS / RRP
- Develop and communicate informative resources and technical aids for safety program learning curriculum via company intranet, online learning, and internal social media platforms
- Assist with the training of accountable managers / leaders
- Collaborate and provide technical mentorship to Workplace Health & Safety Committees to ensure their efficiency and lead annual Workplace Health & Safety Committee safety planning efforts
- Assist with the development of corporate and functional safety plans for each calendar year
- Lead and / or participate in field safety activities including audits (internal / external) across Canada and the US
- Facilitate planning efforts for CPKC’s annual Safety Awards for Excellence
- Liaise with regulatory bodies as the need arises on SMS/ RRP matters
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess post-secondary education, or equivalent experience preferably in occupational health and safety
- Minimum five years’ experience as a Safety Professional working in an industrial setting and three years’ experience in railroad operations or related field would be an asset
- Safety Management System experience and background
- Experience in hazard identification / risk assessment and monitoring methods
- Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- Ability to analyze safety data and use knowledge to guide actions
- Curiosity about using various computer programs (Microsoft Office, SharePoint, OpenText)
- Possessing a CRST, CRSP or CSP designation would be considered an asset
- Practical knowledge of internal and external safety programs and regulations in both Canada and the US (i.e., Canada Labor Code Part II, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA))
- Must have a valid Passport and be able to travel internationally

Management Conductor Program:
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
