PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Specialist, Signals & Communication (S&C) Engineering, based in Calgary, AB, is responsible for planning and scheduling Special Control Zone (SCZ) protection and work blocks to maximize productivity and minimize train delays. During SCZ execution, the role ensures the safe and efficient movement of trains and the protection of installation and maintenance crews and equipment. When not managing SCZ activities, the Specialist supports the design, testing, and implementation of changes or additions to Signal & Communications systems (S&C). This includes test plan and transmittal production, laboratory testing, and on site auditing.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Liaise with the Calgary Operation Centre, Engineering Services and Product Design representatives to balance competing demands to ensure delivery to Signals & Communications (S&C) production schedule and compliance to published train service guarantee
- Plan each Special Control Zone and its execution prior to commencement and construct step by step work and task plan, protection to be afforded and the handling of train movements and sequencing of cutover stages
- Prepare detailed test plans for S&C Projects
- Participate in the testing of changes or additions to S&C systems, and ensure that required safety and technical specifications are adhered to
- Participate in the commissioning of new signal systems, changes to existing signal systems, scheduled typically at night or on weekends
- Deliver training programs as required, ensuring effectiveness of content and selected training strategies
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or general equivalency
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience with a rail dispatch system as a Rail Traffic Control (RTC)
- Additional S&C experience preferred
- Valid passport with ability to travel to U.S./CAN without restrictions
- Experience in traffic planning, work block management and effectively balancing conflicting priorities in a time sensitive and demanding environment accompanied by strong analytical problem solving communication and negotiating skills

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Medical and Drug Testing
This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
