Purpose of the Position:


Reporting to the Director, Sustainability, the Sustainability Specialist, Climate & Energy will oversee the effective delivery of processes and tools to facilitate best in class reporting and communication of CP’s greenhouse gas performance and energy conservation practices.  As a key member of the sustainability team, this positions primary objective is to engage with and provide support to CP’s functional groups and external stakeholders in the development, implementation, monitoring and communication of CP’s climate strategy, a material aspect of the company’s sustainability strategy - Sustainably Driven.  This essential role provides expertise and organizational support for initiatives to transition CP towards a resilient, low-carbon future.


Position Accountabilities:


  • Manages the data collection, analysis, and report development process to facilitate high quality climate-related internal and external communications through CP’s sustainability reports, website, corporate reporting, Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) submissions, regulatory filings, and Task Force for Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD);
  • Supports continual improvement through evaluation of innovative best practices, industry sector benchmarking, gap assessments and research of emerging climate change mitigation, energy savings opportunities and evolving reporting standards and practice;  
  • Identifies and implements opportunities to increase the efficiency of data collection processes and reporting tools;
  • Provides expertise and organizational support for aligning company climate related programs to reporting standards including GRI, SASB, CDP, TCFD, carbon pricing programs (Cap and Trade), scenario analysis, science based target setting (SBTi), and ISO (14064/50001) and others;
  • Collaborates and regularly engages with CP functional groups, regulatory agencies, industry associations, vendors, customers and ESG ratings organizations to support delivery and communication of CP’s climate strategy and sustainability agenda;
  • Provides internal guidance and support for deployment, tracking and reporting of energy savings initiatives across CP’s network;
  • Leads the external assurance process of climate related disclosures by coordinating with assurance providers, facilitating audit events and coordinating engagement with CP’s subject matter experts;   
  • Supports the implementation and delivery of CP’s overall sustainability strategy, Sustainably Driven and contributes to other sustainability related projects and initiatives at CP as required.


Position Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in a related discipline including Environmental Science, Engineering or Business;
  • 3+ years of experience in a sustainability field (e.g. environmental consultant, environmental auditor, environmental engineer, or climate consultant);
  • Relevant work experience with:
    • Climate related communications including development of corporate public disclosures for CDP, TCFD, customer requests, sustainability reports, annual corporate reports and ESG ratings surveys (DJSI, MSCI, Sustainalytics, ISS, etc.);
    • Strong knowledge of emissions reporting frameworks and standards (ISO 14064, WRI GHG Protocol, etc.) and experience with application in the development of carbon emissions inventories for complex organizations and value chains;  
    • Management of energy savings and emissions reductions initiatives including establishing targets (eg. SBTi), business case development, cross-functional collaboration, progress tracking and reporting;
    • Experienced in project management and delivery;
  • Familiarity with the application of lifecycle assessments, carbon pricing, scenario analysis, climate related risk evaluations analysis and renewable energy frameworks considered an asset;
  • Possesses strong knowledge of sustainability and climate related issues, preferably in the transportation sector;
  • Proven analytical and organizational skills, detail oriented and excellent communication skills, including report writing and public speaking skills;
  • Strong interpersonal abilities and demonstrated ability to build relationships within and outside the organization to support program objectives;
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft office and Excel spreadsheets.

Management Conductor Program:
