PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As the Supervisor, Signals & Communications (S&C) Maintenance at CPKC, you will ensure the safe and reliable operation of S&C systems that support the efficient movement of trains and equipment. The role involves conducting electrical and mechanical testing, inspecting and commissioning new installations or system modifications, and providing required data for regulatory affidavit submissions. This position supports the Northern Ontario region, covering the corridor from Cartier to Schrieber.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide safety leadership and promote continuous improvement in workplace safety culture
  • Approve and oversee the commissioning of new or modified S&C communications systems, including voice recorders, narrowband, and data circuits
  • Manage radio systems, including Industry Canada licensing, investigation of radio interference, and daytoday Radio Shop operations
  • Perform and report on electrical and mechanical testing of inservice and spare S&C equipment
  • Maintain accurate records of S&C equipment, configurations, installations, testing, and revisions
  • Coordinate S&C activities with maintenance and construction teams to maximize productivity and efficiency
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies and external partners (e.g., Transport Canada, Industry Canada, railways, telecom providers, and municipalities)
  • Supervise staff by coaching junior S&C employees, issuing alerts and updates, and managing labour, material costs, and O/M budgets 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess high school diploma and an Electronics Technology Diploma
  • Must possess at least two (2) years railway or other relevant experience
  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Strong understanding of VoIP systems, networking, fiber optics, and telecommunication carrier systems
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, and execute work effectively
  • Knowledge of S&C standards, regulatory requirements, signal principles, and signal/communication circuit design for troubleshooting
  • Proficient computer and problemsolving skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP, Computerized Asset Management Systems)
  • Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; knowledge of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Collective Agreement

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Medical and Drug Testing

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
