PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
As an Engineer in Training at CPKC, you will help manage both internally and externally funded railway projects, including tracks, bridges, and related facilities, ensuring effective project and construction oversight. Your responsibilities include conducting feasibility studies, site reconnaissance and surveying, as well as project development and engineering design—from conceptual through detailed stages. You will direct and coordinate site work activities, making sure projects are completed within budget and on schedule, while maintaining accountability for safety, service, productivity, and financial performance. Additionally, you will provide technical analysis and support related to budget compliance, execute assignments from the Chief Engineer, and prepare project submissions as required. This is a developmental position offering opportunities for advancement in the near term. This position can be based in the following locations within CPKC's US Track Southern Division: Kansas City, MO or Shreveport, LA.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Prepare, analyze, and submit monthly and semi-monthly Operating & Maintenance (OM) forecasts, variance statements, and budget reports for various internal teams, working directly with field leaders to identify and implement corrective actions
- Lead monthly budget review calls, summarizing and communicating required actions to Assistant Chief Engineers and collaborating with Finance through updates on Share Point as requested
- Ensure accurate financial tracking by resolving coding errors, processing journal entries and accruals, and addressing PO4S issues for purchased services management
- Coach and train front-line field leaders on OM budget processes and Finance Dashboards to strengthen financial literacy across teams
- Manage and oversee the execution, design, permitting, and construction management of assigned engineering projects, ensuring delivery within scope, timeline, and budget
- Provide direction and oversight to engineering consultants, review project deliverables, and prepare cost estimates, technical reports, memos, and business case documentation
- Coordinate activities with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring compliance with company standards and safe, cost-effective execution of projects
- Represent the company at meetings with public agencies and other third parties, reviewing external proposals and customer projects to ensure standards and operational requirements are met
- Deliver timely analytical reports and support for business development and various initiatives assigned by Chief Engineer
- Demonstrate safety leadership through efficiency testing, job site audits, and serving as part of the rotating on-call support team to respond to incidents and emergencies, including necessary site travel
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Civil preferred; Mechanical or Industrial considered) and eligibility for P. Eng certification
- Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant engineering experience, including co-op placements
- Valid driver’s license required
- Valid passport with ability to travel to U.S./CAN without restrictions
- Proven problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze data, drill down to root causes, and resolve complex issues
- Proficient in MS Office; working knowledge of SAP (including PO4S and Finance Dashboard); experience with modern spreadsheets and project management tools is an asset
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the integrity and interpersonal skills required to work effectively with others
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously to support successful delivery of position-specific accountabilities

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
