PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Train Dispatch Practices and Scheduling Specialist is responsible for ensuring that Train Dispatcher scheduling aligns with operational and business needs. This role plays a key part in maintaining workforce readiness and compliance by supporting the Senior Manager of Train Dispatching Practices in areas such as training coordination, qualification tracking, and disciplinary documentation.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Prepare and update schedules for Crew Management center, Train Dispatcher, and Tower Operator staff, considering vacation, illness, training, and leaves of absence, in accordance with collective agreements and company policies
  • Track and record all schedules, training activities, and qualifications
  • Ensure timely qualification of employees within the parameters of their collective agreements
  • Maintain accurate and current documentation including Seniority Rosters, Train Sheets, Overtime Lists, Desk Matrix, and Hours of Service violations
  •  Prepare monthly absenteeism penalty claim reports for U.S. Operations Center management
  • Draft and post Train Dispatching and Crew Dispatching bulletins in compliance with collective agreement requirements
  • Interpret and apply attendance and discipline policies, making disciplinary recommendations aligned with collective agreements
  • Maintain employee records in coordination with Human Resources and Employee Services, including job changes and disciplinary actions
  • Assist in planning and executing new hire training programs for Train Dispatchers
  • Monitor dispatcher qualifications and workload, reporting results to the General Manager
  • Validate and approve/deny unionized pay entries and penalty claims
  • Manage inventory of Train Sheets and general office supplies
  • Perform monthly operational efficiency testing to validate rules compliance of our Train Dispatchers in support of our Home Safe culture.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency
  • 1 year previous Train Dispatcher experience
  • Strong computer skills and possess the ability to master computerized train control applications is required
  • 1 year experience working under a collective agreement
  • Must be available, outside of standard working hours to support a 24/7 work environment

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

 

Medical and Drug Testing

This is a safety critical position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company or regulated drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
