PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
In the role as a Director - Safety, you will be responsible for leading, managing, directing, and supporting the Field Safety Team in the US & Mexico. The Field Safety Team is responsible for providing field safety support, risk strategy implementation, program development, and compliance management for the required Operations department in US & Mexico. These efforts will also support the CPKC Safety Management System and comply with safety and regulatory requirements.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Lead & manage the Field Safety Team to deliver a variety of safety programs, activities and initiatives; including, but not limited to: development of the monthly scorecards, quarterly trending sheets, safety rule development and management, risk mitigation strategy, safety culture transformation, risk assessments and audits, training course development and compliance management.
- Deliver timely, meaningful information to the Managing Director of Safety to support corporate and departmental strategies by recognizing and analyzing key performance drivers and data, business trends, and emerging technical and industry developments
- Direct cross-functional fields teams to ensure timely, accurate, and effective implementation of the identified key performance drivers
- Collaborate and liaise with senior operational and union leaders in order to develop and support best in class safety solutions, continual SMS improvement and positive safety culture development.
- Lead and support Policy Committee ensuring a high level of functioning within the framework of the required regulations and terms of reference.
- Assist in development of both corporate and functional safety plans for each calendar year and monitor safety performance within the operating departments.
- Provide leadership and training in the investigation of all safety incidents (Incident Drill Downs).
- Train and mentor frontline, middle and senior management in safety leadership best practices.
- Represent CPKC when meeting with external regulators (Transport M Employment and Social
- Development of Mexico/Federal Railroad Administration/Occupational Safety Health Agency.
- Delegate work successfully; conduct timely performance reviews and provide performance feedback/training.
- Oversee Safety Field Team in Mexico to ensure coordinating daily/weekly schedules, leading derailment cause investigations, reading downloads, providing written assessments of incidents, compliance to transportation qualifications, efficiency testing requirements, regulatory compliances and all duties under CPKC Safety Mgt. Systems.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess post-secondary education, or equivalent experience preferably in the safety field;
- Must have a valid driver's license
- Minimum ten years’ experience in railroad operations or related field;
- Safety experience preferred
- Experience working in a unionized environment preferred;
- Project Management experience will be considered an asset;
- Health & safety training curriculum development preferred.
- Qualified conductor/engineer is considered an asset
- Aptitude for working with various computer programs ( SAP, FIORI, and Microsoft Office);
- Practical knowledge of internal and external safety programs and regulations, US and Mexico
- Strong leadership and coaching abilities. Ability to build a team environment and foster teamwork;
- Proven ability to adapt and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment;
- Possess a strong working knowledge of operating practices and rules (e.g. CROR, GCOR, GOI)
- On call 24/7
- Must have a valid Passport and be able to work and travel internationally;
- Travel up to 80% within US and Mexico territory
- Able to sit, stand, walk for long periods of time
- Able to lift 10 pounds
- May be working in extreme conditions/situations for extended periods of time;
- May drive for long periods

Management Conductor Program:
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
