PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
As the Assistant Superintendent, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth movement of traffic within our road territory and yard-terminal. Your leadership will be vital in developing, organizing, and completing the daily yard-terminal/road operating plan in a safe and efficient manner. This position is an exciting opportunity to drive premium results through a dedicated team of Trainmasters, Assistant Trainmasters, and union workforce.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Ensure the safe and tactical execution of the Operating Plan through active supervision of operating (train) crews, Yardmasters, support staff, Assistant Trainmasters and Trainmasters
- Drive Operating Plan in a safe and efficient manner
- Deliver results against performance and financial metrics through asset utilization
- Participate and assist with safety and business plan rollouts across the region
- Assist in establishing career development plans and stretch assignments to further develop team members for career succession
- Mentor the team continuously, reinforcing behaviors leading to outstanding results
- Ensure optimization and cost control through the efficiency of business support functions (i.e., clerical, customer service, sales & marketing)
- Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and CPKC policies; provide input to Labor Relations for future contract bargaining
- Align with all regulatory agencies and maintain positive working relationships
- Conduct safety-related efficiency tests, train rides, and activities to support a safe, efficient operation. Investigate safety rules and policy failures and respond to safety, health, and environmental incidents as needed.
- Ensure timely implementation of processes identified through corporate initiatives and ensure the application of CPKC’s safety practices, policies, and procedures by all subordinates
- Must prioritize achieving results while maintaining a focus on safety.
- Knowledge of and ability to conduct investigations.
- Must have a full understanding of your operating budget.
- Ability to establish a team and influence the team to strive for success and move to the next level.
- Ability to provide service to customers and community.
- Ability to drill down, understand root cause, and resolve intricate issues
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent experience is required, post-secondary education is preferred
- Valid driver’s license is required
- Must be or become rules qualified (CROR - Canadian Rail Operating Rules).
- 10 years of railway operations experience
- 5 years’ previous supervisory experience in logistics or an operational environment is preferred
- Experience leading unionized employees
- Must be able to work all types of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays in all weather conditions
- Must have the ability to speak up and hold people accountable to CPKC core safety principles
- Effective time management skills and strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to foster trust and credibility across the business

Management Conductor Program:
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
