PURPOSE OR OBJECTIVE:

The Manager, Damage Prevention and Claim Services leads a team committed to the delivery of shipment damage quality and the reduction of freight claims (financial) exposure to CP.  The Manager shall use critical thinking, data trending analysis and field engagement to determine the root cause and create effective long-lasting solutions. 

The Manager is customer focused, committed to delivering results and has the proven ability to coach and develop a high performing team.  The Manager shall improve the efficiency and effectiveness their team, customers and CP to deliver best in class delivery of damage free shipment delivery across CP’s network in Canada and the United States.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

 

  • Lead CP’s shipment quality / damage prevention programs for assigned Intermodal, Automotive, Boxcar and Perishable/Refrigerated (TempPro) commodity & customer groups, delivering leadership and coaching to manage and resolve issues, damages and reduce CP’s financial exposure;

  • Use data (statistical and trend analysis) and observational analysis to identify root cause of damage occurrence and develop/deploy counter measures to address with stakeholders and CP customers;

  • Lead field assessment and incident/derailment efforts with stakeholders as individual contributor or incident manager coordinating assigned resources to the project or incident;

  • Review and approve freight claims and contractor invoices for assigned customer accounts or prevention / incident activities to departmental, legislative or contracted standards while mitigating the financial expense CP;

  • Represent CP through regular contracted (AAR/RAC) or ad hoc industry and customer functions for assigned accountabilities to ensure CP is engaged in best practices; 

  • Lead department strategy, talent management, and career development of employees within hierarchy (union and non-union) including setting department objectives/KPIs with review and ongoing assessment of set targets.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • University degree, with minimum 5 years’ experience in risk management, damage avoidance/prevention, or security or liability management; 
  • Highly motivated individual with demonstrated strategic and leadership capabilities, with experience leading union or non-unionized staff;

  • Ability to communicate and influence stakeholders (team members, customers, associations and internal groups) up to the GM level;

  • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking, team building, planning and decision making skills – ability to drill down and understand root cause to resolve complex issues with drive and urgency;

  • Ability to weigh options and make thought out decisions timely to influence change and risk mitigation and avoidance;

  • Proficient using Microsoft Excel (data analysis), Word and Outlook with moderate familiarity with Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft VISO or AutoCad;

  • Understanding of contract law and interpretation of legal theory relative to commodity liability with moderate technical understanding in rail equipment, and cargo loading factors;

  • Knowledge of CP core business, customers and markets served considered desirable.

Management Conductor Program:
