PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Specialist – Hydrogen Locomotive Field Testing is responsible for supporting the execution of mainline testing of hydrogen-powered locomotives in the British Columbia and Alberta regions. This role supports all aspects of locomotive field testing, including scheduling, onboard monitoring, inspections, repairs, modifications, refueling activities, safety compliance, data analysis, and coordination with engineering, operations, maintenance, procurement, and external vendors. The position plays a critical role in advancing CPKC's hydrogen locomotive program and zero-emission rail technology initiatives.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Manage and coordinate testing schedules to ensure field testing activities are executed on time
- Support all aspects of mainline testing for high-horsepower hydrogen locomotives
- Monitor locomotive performance during in-service testing
- Coordinate maintenance, repairs, and inspection activities with mechanical teams
- Work with refueling facility personnel to ensure locomotives are fueled safely and efficiently
- Schedule test locomotives for train assignments and coordinate with local operations teams
- Perform and support hydrogen refueling operations and monitoring
- Conduct hands-on inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and modifications
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all safety procedures and regulations
- Develop working knowledge of shop safety management systems, including lockout/tagout procedures
- Collaborate with engineering teams to identify performance improvements and resolve technical issues
- Work with vendors to integrate locomotive control systems and onboard technologies
- Collect, download, analyze, and present operational and performance data
- Prepare technical reports and presentations for leadership, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering or similar field
- Strong analytical skills with experience performing data analysis and detailed performance evaluations
- Experience working in railroad operations and locomotive maintenance environments
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word
- Ability to travel domestically and respond to occasional after-hours or weekend operational requirements
- Valid driver’s license

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Medical and Drug Testing
This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
