PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Yardmasters are the traffic controllers of the yards and terminals in the railroad industry. Using computers and managing switching equipment in the yard tower, they safely route trains and railcars within the yard. The yardmaster review switch lists and train orders to coordinate schedules to resolve arrival and departure time of trains, running the sequence of movement routing of trains onto tracks.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Plan and implement railcar processing and classification through hump yard operations
• Connect with other railroads to acquire clearance to operate over tracks in a prompt and safe manner
•  Align with all federal rules and regulations
• Directly lead multiple switch crews, make up train builds and coordinate safe train movements within yard
• Receives and transmits switching orders to and from yard crews
• Yardmasters also provide oversight clerical staff in the terminal/yard
• Maintain records pertaining to yard operations

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma or "General Equivalency Diploma or equivalent experience" is necessary
• Prior railroad experience (Conductor/Engineer Certification preferred)
• Ability to high stress circumstance and communicate well with various partners
• Excel and lead in a fast paced, demanding environment
• Knowledge of all bargaining agreements used within the operation on the yard
• Thursday 2200 - 0600 (General Yardmaster), Tuesday/ Wednesday 1400 -2200, Friday/ Saturday 2200-0600, Rest days Sunday/ Monday.
• Must be flexible with scheduling

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Medical Requirements: CPKC is committed to the safety and health of its employees and the general public.
