PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Supervisor Intermodal and Automotive Operations is responsible for coordinating the movement of trains within the terminal, directing and managing the performance of our intermodal and automotive operation, ensuring safety and efficiency in operations, and communicating effectively across departments. The Supervisor must be a proactive leader with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. They should have strong problem-solving skills, be able to communicate effectively with various departments, and have a firm commitment to maintaining safety and efficiency in all aspects of terminal operations. This position reports to the Manager of Intermodal & Automotive Operations.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Supervise intermodal operation priorities, oversee yard activities,coordinate track protection, ensure adherence to roles and responsibilities, and manage the accurate assignment of traffic and blocking to trains, including coordination of Perishable Protective Services
  • Plan and coordinate inbound trains, ensuring clarity in yarding strategies and spot plans for efficient space utilization and issue yarding instructions for inbound trains to optimize flow and processing within the yard
  • Systematically manage and prioritize inbound and outbound trains, facilitating the movement of equipment, organizing the efficient assembly, processing, and departure of trains and transfers across multiple systems
  • Facilitate crew transportation to expedite work events and improve operational efficiency
  • Distribute necessary paperwork and instructions for outbound trains, ensuring compliance with operating rules and organize train order, coordinating with Locomotive Shops as required
  • Conduct job briefings with switch crews, provide work instructions, and monitor productivity to meet operational targets
  • Manage crew hours to ensure compliance with off-duty requirements
  • Configure locomotive placement in collaboration with the Locomotive Shops
  • Maintain communication with the Mechanical department for track inspections and the management of bad order cars
  • Liaise with the Auto Compound for spotting and pulling, providing accurate switch windows, and railcar counts
  • Resolve no-bill rail car issues by working closely with the billing department to correct discrepancies
  • Conduct inspections of yard vehicles, including fueling and maintenance checks of trucks, SUVs, and utility vehicles
  • Oversee inventory management, ensuring that the physical location of railcars matches the systemic records
  • Respond to incidents with prompt and effective action, ensuring appropriate escalations and emergency responses are executed as necessary
  • Communicate with other departments regarding train movements to synchronize operations
  • Manage safety compliance within the terminal, providing corrective actions as needed to uphold standards
  • Participate in conference calls to provide operational updates, address exceptions on the intermodal network, lead turnover calls for seamless handover between shifts, align staff on operational priorities, and engage in safety discussions to promote a culture of safety within the team
  • Provide support and consultation to Director, Asst. Director, and Manager with regards to their responsibilities and accountabilities

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED as a minimum educational requirement
  • Possessing knowledge and experience in intermodal operations or similar fields, with skills in planning, issuing work instructions, optimizing operations, managing capacity, and overseeing equipment maintenance, is considered a significant asset
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a proven ability to lead, inspire, and manage teams
  • Strong commitment to safety and efficiency in the workplace
  • Proven ability in performance management and driving team success
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with various teams and stakeholders
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including incident response, risk management, and implementing corrective actions
  • Compatibility with the company's values and culture
  • Ability to drill down, understand root cause and resolve complex issues
  • High proficiency in MS Office Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Experience with OASIS, Tyes, Nexus is an asset
  • Proficient in understanding and applying instructions in accordance with a Collective Agreement.
  • Willing to be available as required on a 7x24 basis

CPKC’s Alcohol and Drug Policy and Procedures (“Policy and Procedures”) support these commitments.   All new hires for a safety sensitive. position will be required to complete a pre-employment medical that includes a physical, vision, hearing, alcohol, and drug audit assessment. Pre-employment qualification drug test(s) are also required. This includes candidates participating in the Trainee Program who will also be required to pass a drug test during the training process before receiving final qualification for the position.

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
