As a CP Spare Intermodal employee you will perform shunt services and or general cleaning/labourer duties with reasonable care throughout the terminal as identified by the Supervisor Operations. You will perform visual inspection of Intermodal equipment, for damages/defects and preform pre-tripping of containers for delivery and or receipt by rail or ground transportation.  You will also be required to update Oasis and TMS systems as required. This position has no guaranteed minimum hours and will report on a on-call basis. 



  • Hostling trailers/containers/chassis to and from railway flat cars and within each Terminal in support of efficient train operations;
  • Hostling Trailers/containers/chassis to, from and within each Terminal in support of terminal operations and equipment maintenance (including but not limited to: shunting of bad order units that require repair, units in Perishable Protective Service (“PPS” units) that require inspection or fuel, dirty units that require cleaning, and units in support of repositioning, etc.);
  • Hostling shipments to and from co-located customers, adjacent to each Terminal location;
  • Updating CP’s information systems immediately as work is completed;
  • Ensuring that the trailers/containers/chassis are parked in such a manner as to permit easy attachment of lifting equipment and/or equipment taking delivery of the trailers/containers /chassis;
  • Perform inspections (i.e., adequate circle-checks) prior to the handling of container and chassis equipment;
  • With any movement within the Terminal or at adjacent customer locations, the chassis locking pins are to be locked and/or unlocked in accordance with CP processes and/or policy;
  • Facilitating yard operations and maintenance by repositioning equipment within the Terminal when required by CP. These activities shall include but will not be limited to clearing equipment from specific areas to allow for activities such as yard maintenance or snow removal;
  • Assisting with light duty general operational issues and yard maintenance with personnel and/or equipment when personnel and/or equipment are available. These tasks may include but are not limited to the use of a CP-supplied magnet attachment to pick up metal debris or short-term gate assistance;
  • Clean and set temperature on required equipment in preparation for customer loading;     
  • Inspect equipment within the terminal for damages/defects; 
  • Connect/Disconnect PPS equipment when required on railcars, plug in reefers held on ground; 
  • Monitoring of loaded PPS equipment located within the terminal; 
  • Fuel equipment from stationary tanks and or mobile tank as required, recording liters supplied;  
  • May be required to assist with B&B supplies, replenishing spill kits, clean up minor spills;      
  • Miscellaneous cleaning and general yard waste collection around the terminal including heavy equipment and yard vehicles;  
  • Other miscellaneous duties as/when required.  
  • This is a safety-sensitive position within an environment of heavy equipment and 

constant traffic flow. 



  • Must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalence Diploma;
  • Must possess a valid driver license. 
  • Truck and Transport Mechanic License or equivalent (i.e Red Seal) is an asset;
  • 5+ years of direct work experience as mechanic/technician is an asset;
  • Experience in wheel and tire work;
  • Knowledge of Electrical and Electronics;
  • Computer/diagnostic skills;
  • Knowledge of Cummins/International diesel engines and their components;
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and their components;
  • Knowledge of transmissions and their components;
  • Proficiency with maintenance and repair tools;
  • Demonstrate advanced reading and writing skills;
  • Ability to follow instruction;
