PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Reliability Specialist applies reliability engineering principles and data-driven analysis to improve locomotive performance, reduce failures, and optimize maintenance practices. This role identifies opportunities to enhance asset reliability and availability while minimizing total cost of ownership. The position provides technical expertise and recommendations to locomotive fleet managers on maintenance strategies, asset health, and lifecycle planning. Working closely with cross-functional teams, the Reliability Specialist supports safe, efficient, and cost-effective fleet operations.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Analyze locomotive fleet performance, reliability trends, and failure data to identify root causes and develop maintenance, overhaul, and component rebuild strategies
• Support proactive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance programs to improve locomotive reliability, availability, and overall fleet performance
• Conduct root cause investigations using reliability engineering methodologies, 5 Whys, and statistical analysis techniques
• Develop and communicate technical instructions, maintenance policies, quality alerts, and reliability improvement initiatives
• Monitor compliance with maintenance standards, work scopes, and repair specifications across mechanical shops and overhaul programs
• Evaluate component and supplier performance through data analysis, audits, inspections, and field assessments to ensure quality and reliability requirements are met
• Partner with Mechanical field operations to investigate defects, support troubleshooting efforts, and provide reliability engineering expertise
• Assess the effectiveness of preventative and predictive maintenance programs and recommend improvements to optimize asset performance and lifecycle costs
• Represent CPKC on industry committees and support the evaluation and implementation of new technologies, standards, and best practices that enhance locomotive reliability

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
• 2 years minimum of demonstrated locomotive maintenance, reliability, or engineering experience with strong technical expertise in locomotive systems.
• Knowledge of reliability engineering principles, failure analysis, and asset performance management
• Training and experience in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methodologies; Six Sigma certification or experience is considered an asset
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex reliability and performance data
• Proficiency with reliability, maintenance, and asset management software, CAD applications, remote diagnostic systems, and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Power BI)
• Self-motivated team player with strong communication skills and the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, 24/7 operating environment while supporting cross-functional teams and field operations

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
